Artefact (2011), Photo-installation, D-print on aluminium mounted, 30x40cm

Artefact is thought in its relation to space. The installation questions the preconceptions of the world of art, and reproducibility of the photograph. In a process of work performed in situ images are placed in space shooting. Two seemingly identical prints are presented on the wall, each on one of the sides. The viewer, by moving in the exhibition space, do not know if the two images are actually identical, an inner feeling of doubt settling. The intervention plays on the effect of anamorphosis, related geometric forms included in the image, which, depending on where one stands, will never seems the geometry of the adjacent photograph. The viewer becomes then aware of the role his own perception plays in his way to relate with an artwork.

Einkapselung (2011), foto-automat mounted on aluminium & wooden framed, 4 x 5 cm

"We look at them, but we do not see them. We see them just to look at themselves. They are in front of us, but they are in themselves. They look into themselves, but they can not see their own face. and we conversely ... "

- Cristian Dragnea, Philosopher

Einkapselung is a collection of ID portraits of people taken at random from my meetings. These photo-automat are digitized for documentation and then deposited in the interstices of the city in the course of my wanderings in Berlin. This is for me to experience the idea of beauty in the implementation of an enterprise doomed to insignificance and incompleteness of the representation.

Foto-automat collection started in 2010. Endless project.

Could we imagine a photography that belongs neither to the abstract field, or that of the documentary? A photography that does not seek to represent nothing other than itself: its space, its aesthetic and representational features and its relation to the viewer.

Jean Marc Bustamante, in 70-80 years, seeks to «make photographs that have tableau value» and provides such name to its images (tableau N°...). The idea may seem antithetical: Photography would them find its autonomy thanks to the «tableau» ... Many paradigms about photography in art history were established and must be questioned. To convey the medium its independence in the fields of art, and in the current context of a society of images, I found more appropriate to opt for an approach to the ontology of photography, considering its act and its result as a whole, that could be described as «vue» (view/overview). This term implies both what is given to actually see and subjectivity of sight offered to us, summarizes the nature of a photograph. In an extended critique of Bustamante’s work, these «views» take place in a search of an absolute photography.

They attempt to address the medium to its status as an object, giving priority to an empirical research and choosing a critical distance with the idea of the medium as a conceptual abstraction. This research focuses on the production of images operating a transfiguration of reality (Danto) without rejecting the first elements of the medium, i.e its optical characteristics. By this, it tries to put our interpretation of the world to the test by comparing, in the image, the foveal and peripheral vision, and/or looking for a form of silence or misuse of photographic representation.

"Vue 8503" (2009) is one of the first images from this reflection on the unreality of reality through photography. It includes an explicit reference to the work of Jörg Sasse. While working on the details, this picture is trying to "transfigure" (Danto, 1981) reality into an abstract pictorial composition. The time of the shooting, film grain and print-format of were choosen to provide a dual image reading: when it hangs on the wall and that we are at a sufficient distance, the picture resembles to a monochrome, which is due to the uniformity of color values and the virtual disappearance of the horizon. Only the first plan gives us a clue as to whether it is indeed a photograph. When we approached the image to see the smallest detail that can be seen in the background, we can discover the rowers portrayed by film grain.

By the meeting of extremes, the near and distant, abstract and figurative, the first art form of photography that was the Pictorialism and contemporary photography (commonly recognized by the documentary form), this picture is trying, through the history of the medium, a synthesis between painting and photography. It questions this appearing strange relationship between the here and elsewhere.

This project is currently in progress. It will consist of a series of images using the same principles of shooting. "vue 8503" is cyan. With great care of giving the work a formal coherence, each image will possess dominant corespondant own primary colors of Visual Arts (RGB / CMYK) ...

To facilitate a projective-type meeting with the image, I considered a visual system using reflection or gleam as a means to materialize a space for reflection directly rooted in the work. Opera # 1 is hung in a dark space. The choice of format, similar to a human scale, invites the viewer to physically take place in a shaft of light falling on the ground at 1.50 m in front of the picture, while showing his own reflection in the image. This visual effect allows me to put the viewer in a protagonist position, playing his role of observer. A way to put him in front of a situation that will give him the opportunity to raise questions about its relation to the work. As explained by Roger Dutilleul, "the key is that the picture look at you. The viewer must not look at it but must content oneself to see, that is to say, to cross there eyes, to suspect the thought or emotion deep and intimate of the artist. Two living beings who communicate as best one can"
